Welcome to Oxhey First School. We believe in building strong, positive relationships between our pupils, parents, staff, governors and the community and we welcome visitors to our school.
One of the lasting impressions visitors to our school comment on is the behaviour, manners and productivity of the learners in an orderly, quiet and calm environment. Children are really inspired to learn here because their teachers provide them with learning opportunities that are motivational, they encourage children’s curiosity, intellectual thinking yet are achievable and interesting. We carefully weave areas of the curriculum together to make meaningful learning for our children. When we study the sub- continent of India for example, we link the wonderful colours, patterns and textures in fabrics when children design and produce saris. We study texts linked with other cultures and ways of life. A new unit of learning is Brazil where children study animals in a rainforest habitat where debates about deforestation encourage children to think of the wider world. Take time to look at the parent’s curriculum booklet on the web site that will show you our programme of learning over two years.
The second aspect of our school that is frequently commented upon by visitors to the school, is the safe, secure setting. We have a large diverse site, huge grassed areas, a little ‘forest’, play trails and three different playgrounds where children learn to get along with each other relax and learn in a different context.
A real strength of Oxhey is the staff. From the hard working office staff who are a major link between home and school to the cleaning, site and catering staff and the teaching team. Teachers work incredibly hard crafting lessons with the needs of the children central to their planning. They are responsible for driving the learning forward and enabling children to achieve their potential.
We have teams of children in school who are the voice of the children. We have a Junior Leadership Team, Bully Busters, Play leaders and an Eco/ Gardening team, where children are encouraged to become active partners in their school where they have a forum to make suggestions in order to continually improve provision. The team of governors is central to driving continual improvement. They have a multitude of skills, that when combined, contribute to the strong leadership at Oxhey.
Parents are encouraged to engage with school through activity mornings, workshops, school events, concerts and parent’s Forum and the PTFA. Every day counts…Every minute matters, is a maxim that we hold dear at Oxhey. We support children’s acquisition of basic skills as you can see from the Quality Mark plaques in the foyer. In addition, we work closely within the Biddulph Trust of schools, whose overall aim is to improve the learning of all children in the town.
It is a privilege to be head teacher at a school where teams combine to produce an active and exciting place to be, where everyone has the opportunity to make things even better.
